Cases designed for the iPhone 17 Pro may fit the iPhone 18 Pro, according to manufacturers like Otterbox. This contradicts rumors of a thicker model but is based on packaging already sold at Best Buy in the US.
Otterbox packaging mentions both models
Otterbox cases sold at Best Buy in the US explicitly state their compatibility with the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro. Mark Gurman, a journalist at Bloomberg, shared a photo of the packaging on X, where the mention appears in English and French. Manufacturer Astropad also confirms that its suppliers are providing the same information.
This announcement is surprising, as recent leaks suggested the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would be thicker than their predecessors. One leaker notably mentioned a 2 mm increase for the iPhone 18 Pro, confirmed by images of parts from an Apple supplier. Another source, however, claimed the iPhone 18 Pro Max would retain the same thickness as the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

A risky bet or reliable information?
Apple sometimes provides case manufacturers with the dimensions of its upcoming models to ensure accessory availability at launch. But mistakes happen: some manufacturers rely on rumors and get it wrong. Gurman himself remains skeptical, simply commenting: "a bit early" to be certain.
The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max were already thicker and heavier than their predecessors. If rumors of an unchanged design are confirmed, Apple may simply optimize the internal space without altering the external dimensions.
The definitive answer will come during Apple’s keynote, scheduled for early September. In the meantime, cautious consumers would be wise to wait for the launch before buying a case for the iPhone 18 Pro.
