Price alone isn’t enough: This AI matches reconditioned smartphones to your real needs

A French startup has launched an AI that analyzes your actual usage and the technical specs of reconditioned smartphones to recommend the most suitable model, going beyond the simple price criterion. The tool, already tested by 5,000 users, promises 92% accuracy in its recommendations.

An AI that deciphers your needs, not just your budget

The RecoPhone platform, developed by Lyon-based company GreenTech Solutions, uses a machine learning algorithm to assess each user’s priorities. Unlike traditional comparators, which rely on static filters (price, brand, condition), this AI considers dynamic criteria: app usage frequency, battery life needs, photo or gaming usage, and even the desired ownership duration.

To refine its suggestions, the tool draws on a database of 12,000 reconditioned models, updated in real time with partner resellers’ stock. Each smartphone is rated on 15 technical criteria (processor, RAM, battery capacity, etc.) and 8 usage criteria (app compatibility, shock resistance, etc.).

92% accuracy, and targeted savings

During its beta phase, conducted between April and July 2026 with 5,000 users, RecoPhone achieved a 92% satisfaction rate. Tests show that 78% of recommendations led to a purchase, compared to 45% for traditional comparators. The AI also identifies potential savings: on average, users saved €120 compared to their initial choice, while getting a device better suited to their needs.

The tool also provides an estimate of the smartphone’s remaining lifespan, by cross-referencing battery data, available software updates, and the model’s usage history. This feature addresses a growing concern among consumers: 63% of reconditioned buyers cite longevity as a primary criterion, according to a GreenTech Solutions study from June 2026.

A model that wins over resellers

Partner resellers, such as Back Market or Recommerce, see this AI as a way to reduce returns. "Customers return less often with a device that doesn’t suit them. This reduces logistics costs and improves our conversion rate," explains Thomas Leroy, Product Manager at Back Market. The platform has already integrated RecoPhone as a recommendation option on its website.

GreenTech Solutions has no plans to stop there. By the end of 2026, the AI is expected to incorporate environmental criteria, such as the model’s carbon footprint or spare parts availability, to further refine its suggestions. This evolution aligns with the growing trend of consumers prioritizing sustainable purchases.

With RecoPhone, reconditioned smartphones move from a budget alternative to a reasoned choice, aligned with concrete needs. The question remains whether this approach, still niche, can compete with industry giants, which focus more on volume than personalization.
