Spotify adds notes to editorial and user playlists

Spotify now lets editors and users add explanatory notes to their playlists. Editor notes appear in six flagship playlists, while user notes are visible on their own creations in over 100 countries.

Notes to explain musical choices

The Playlist Notes feature, inspired by the User Notes concept launched in late July 2026, now extends to playlists managed by Spotify’s editorial team. Editors can detail their intent: why a track was selected, its cultural significance, or its fit with the playlist’s theme. These explanations appear in six major playlists: Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, mint, and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

Users can add notes to their own playlists or those they co-edit, directly from the mobile app (iOS and Android). These annotations, visible to anyone with access to the playlist, apply to tracks, podcast episodes, or audiobooks. They allow sharing a memory, recommendation, or justification for a choice.

Gradual rollout and restrictions

The rollout of editorial Playlist Notes began on August 17, 2026, but remains limited to six countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Only users aged 16 and over on free or Premium plans have access. For user notes, the rollout covers over 100 markets, with no specified country restrictions.

Editor profiles, accessible by clicking their name in a note or at the top of a playlist, display their favorite tracks and albums as well as the playlists they curate. Notes also appear in the Now Playing screen, even outside the original playlist.

What this changes for listening

This update strengthens Spotify’s narrative and social dimension. Playlists are no longer just track lists but spaces for sharing context, stories, or memories. Platform rules apply: notes must comply with terms of use and moderation guidelines.

Spotify continues to focus on personalization and interaction, without AI this time. It remains to be seen whether users will adopt these notes to enrich their playlists or if the tool will remain limited to editors.
