Sennheiser launches the Momentum True Wireless 5, premium wireless earbuds with user-replaceable batteries. A first for the brand, which also anticipates upcoming EU regulations on audio device durability.

Replaceable batteries: a rarity in the market

The Momentum True Wireless 5 stand out with their modular design: both earbuds and case feature removable batteries, replaceable in minutes using the included screwdriver. A solution already adopted by Fairphone for its Fairbuds in April 2024, but a first for Sennheiser. This approach meets growing durability demands, as the European Union will require replaceable batteries for portable audio products starting early 2027.

The German manufacturer states that this innovation prevents premature device replacement while maintaining initial performance. The earbuds offer up to 12 hours of battery life without active noise cancellation (ANC), and up to 40 hours with the case. An 8-minute quick charge provides 1 hour of playback. However, battery life with ANC enabled is not specified: the Momentum True Wireless 4, their predecessors, achieved 7h40 under these conditions.

Redesigned for comfort and confirmed audio performance

The Momentum True Wireless 5 ditch the stabilization fins in favor of a bean-shaped design, deemed more comfortable by 73% of testers according to Sennheiser. This shape, inspired by data from thousands of ear models, also allows for a slimmer, more portable case. Each earbud now weighs 7 grams, compared to 6.2 grams for the previous generation.

Audio-wise, the earbuds retain the 7 mm TrueResponse dynamic driver, manufactured and tested in Ireland, with a frequency response of 5 Hz to 21 kHz. Sound can be customized via an 8-band equalizer in the Smart Control Plus app (iOS/Android). Connectivity relies on Bluetooth 6.0, supporting aptX Adaptive (24-bit/96 kHz) and aptX Lossless codecs for lossless transmission. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound technology and a low-latency mode are also integrated for gaming.

The adaptive hybrid active noise cancellation has been improved, featuring an automatic wind-reduction mode and a micro-perforated acoustic plate to minimize turbulence. Eight sensors (six microphones and two bone-conduction accelerometers) power an AI-based voice extraction algorithm. The earbuds support Dolby Atmos with head-tracking for an immersive spatial audio experience.
