Starting August 24, 2026, YouTube will count a view as soon as a video’s first image appears, with no minimum duration. This rule applies to all formats (long videos, Shorts, live streams) and is expected to mechanically boost view counts.
One view = one start, end of story
YouTube is dropping the implicit 30-second viewing rule for long videos. Now, simply launching a video — even if immediately abandoned — will increment the counter. This method has already been in place for Shorts since March 2025. The platform justifies this change by its desire to harmonize metrics across all formats and reflect creators’ "true exposure," similar to TikTok or Instagram.
Creators will see their view counts rise faster, but with no direct impact on revenue. YouTube is maintaining its monetization criteria: for long videos, 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time over 12 months are still required. For Shorts, the threshold is 10 million views over 90 days. Starting January 31, 2027, these thresholds will be raised to 8,000 hours for long videos and 20 million views for Shorts.
"Engaged views" for pros, inflated numbers for the public
YouTube retains an alternative metric, "engaged views," available in advanced analytics (YouTube Analytics). This measures actual watch time and remains the basis for ad revenue calculations. Advertisers and creators will therefore need to rely on this data to assess qualitative audience, while the general public will see higher counts that are less representative of real attention.
The platform has not specified whether auto-previews (when hovering over thumbnails) will be counted as views. It also reiterates that bots and artificial inflation systems remain excluded from counts, without detailing the enhanced detection mechanisms.

What this means in practice
- View counters will increase mechanically, including for videos abandoned after a few seconds.
- Creators gain a marketing argument (higher numbers) without automatic financial gain.
- Advertisers and agencies will need to prioritize "engaged views" to measure real impact.
- Monetization and eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program remain based on unchanged criteria until January 2027.
YouTube aligns its practices with direct competitors, but at the cost of a less reliable primary metric. The true audience measurement — the one that matters for revenue — remains hidden in professional tools. For the rest, the numbers will show inflated popularity, but not necessarily increased attention.
