GTA 6: Massive leak fuels hype ahead of official reveal

GTA 6: Massive leak reveals dated gameplay, reignites hype
Source: IGN France

Unprecedented GTA 6 gameplay footage leaked online this week. Though from a 2022-2023 build, the videos confirm ambitious mechanics and heighten anticipation ahead of the official August 27 Netflix reveal.

An old build, but concrete details

The leaked sequences, authenticated by Rockstar’s DMCA takedowns, show Jason, one of the protagonists, playing basketball or fighting with a wrench. These clips come from a version developed between 2022 and 2023, predating the second official trailer. Despite their age, they reveal new elements: a progression system inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2 (such as a "Focus" meter that increases after a basket), an economic system with two separate wallets, and a stealth mechanic against police, indicated by a light halo and a detection meter.

Hand-to-hand combat clearly borrows from RDR2, with smoother and more impactful animations than in GTA 5. The game’s map, inspired by Florida, appears divided into five counties, including a location named "Goose Key." Other details, like a six-star wanted level or fuel gauges, remain unconfirmed: they may have evolved since this build.

A claimed leak and threats

The group CYBERLEEK, behind the leak, claims a militant motivation. In a manifesto, it demands that publishers abandon digital pre-orders, single-player DLCs already included on the disc, and preserve offline content. It threatens to target other studios if these conditions are not met. Rockstar, already hit by leaks in 2022 (90 development videos stolen by the Lapsus$ group), is attempting to limit the spread of the clips via copyright takedowns.

An unintended teaser before August 27

The leak comes nine days before GTA 6’s Extended Look, set for an exclusive Netflix premiere on August 27 at 9 PM, followed by a YouTube and official website release six hours later. If this dated build already impresses, the final version promised by Rockstar could widen the gap. The studio, which prioritizes controlled communication, finds itself with an unintended marketing argument: players are already comparing these images to official trailers, fueling anticipation.

What this means for the release

GTA 6 is confirmed for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders, launched in late June, have already generated over $260 million in revenue in one week, with 89% of purchases for the Ultimate Edition (€99.99). The game will not be available as a physical disc version at launch, only via download codes or digital purchase. A standard physical version may arrive in December, according to unconfirmed rumors.

This leak, though partial and outdated, offers a first concrete glimpse of GTA 6’s gameplay and ambitions. It also highlights that Rockstar remains a prime target for leaks, despite its efforts to lock down information. The August 27 presentation will reveal whether these mechanics have been retained, improved... or abandoned.
