Sony has not yet set a release date for the PlayStation 6. CEO Hiroki Totoki cites uncertainties due to high component costs, particularly memory, expected until 2027.

An uncertain timeline, tied to component shortages

Rumors about the PS6 have been circulating for months, but Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki clarified the situation in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. According to him, the volatility in the electronic components market — especially memory — makes it impossible, for now, to set a price or a launch date. Memory prices are expected to remain high in 2027 due to a persistent shortage, prompting Sony to "carefully consider" its strategy.

Delays expected despite analyst predictions

Several analysts had predicted a PS6 release in 2027, but even internally, Sony has not yet made a decision. Totoki had already expressed reservations in May 2026, emphasizing the need to monitor market developments: "We really need to observe and track the situation. […] Given the current circumstances, memory prices are expected to remain very high for fiscal year 2027. We need to carefully consider what we will do."

The component shortage affects multiple Sony sectors, not just gaming. It is driven by growing demand from AI data centers, geopolitical tensions (such as the war in Iran), and allegations of price manipulation. Result: console manufacturers, including Sony, face increased pressure.

Toward a definitive end to physical discs?

While the date remains uncertain, one direction seems clear: the PS6 is expected to be 100% digital. Despite player criticism, Sony is sticking to its plan for a future without physical media, aiming to phase out discs entirely by 2028. The console could also strengthen subscriptions and cross-generational games.

For now, players will have to settle for the PS5. Sony’s next generation will not arrive until economic and industrial conditions stabilize — which, for now, is not happening anytime soon.
