GIMP is phasing out its legacy XCF format, in use since 1997, in favor of a compressed XML architecture. Version 3.4 also improves compatibility with Photoshop’s PSD files, particularly for text layers and adjustments.
A new format to replace XCF
The XCF format, in place since GIMP’s creation, shows its limits with large or complex projects. The development team, led by maintainer Jehan, is working on a successor based on a compressed archive containing XML files. This structure, similar to .docx or .zip files, allows each project element to be stored separately.
The main advantage: GIMP will no longer need to rewrite the entire file on every save. Only modified parts will be updated, speeding up saving and enabling automatic backups. This new format will be required for future features, such as multi-page management and animation, planned for version 3.6.
The XCF format won’t disappear entirely. GIMP will continue to open existing files in all future versions, but the new format will become the standard for future development.
Better PSD compatibility
GIMP 3.4 enhances support for PSD files, the proprietary format of Adobe Photoshop. New features include preserving editable text layers, as well as certain adjustment layers and recent layer styles. These improvements aim to ease the transition for users switching from Photoshop to GIMP.
Non-destructive editing is also a focus. Filters applied to layer masks and gradients can now be modified without altering the original data. Other technical improvements are planned, such as native file selection dialogs for Windows and macOS, and scalable vector (SVG) cursors that adapt to display size.

Timeline and availability
The first building blocks of these changes will arrive with the development version 3.3.2, before the stable release of 3.4. Version 3.6, which will include page management and animation, is still in the design phase. In the meantime, the recently released 3.2.6 focuses on bug fixes.
