GTA 6: 5 Key Gameplay and Scale Details

GTA 6: 5 Key Gameplay and Scale Details

GTA 6 takes shape: 80 hours of gameplay, a map twice as large as GTA 5, and mixed technical performance on consoles. Here’s what to remember from the latest reveals.

1. An estimated 80-hour playtime

Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, completed GTA 6’s main story, along with some optional missions, in 80 hours. This estimate includes side activities but not all secondary content. For comparison, GTA 5 takes an average of 51.5 hours to finish its main story and part of its additional content.

2. A colossal map, Rockstar’s largest yet

The fictional state of Leonida, where GTA 6 takes place, is twice as large as GTA 5’s map and three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2 (in playable area). Vice City alone would already be twice as vast as Los Santos, and the entire map would reach the equivalent of eleven times Los Santos and its surroundings.

3. A world designed for immersion

Rockstar is betting on an advanced life simulator: go to the gym, go shopping, ride a jet ski, play basketball, or simply watch TV while drinking a smoothie. The studio encourages players to explore and interact with the environment.

"Interact with people, explore, and maybe even get into trouble. Rob places, make money. Or just watch TV while drinking a smoothie at home. It’s up to you." — Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar NorthTranslated from French

4. Performance capped at 30 FPS on consoles

Rob Nelson confirms that GTA 6 currently runs at 30 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A 60 FPS mode at launch remains uncertain: he will need to consult the technical team to decide. This technical limitation could impact smoothness, especially in such a dense open world.

5. A technical preview on PS5

The game was showcased on a standard PS5, revealing notable graphical advancements: ray tracing management, realistic global illumination, and hair modeling (including textured hair) with rare detail. However, artifacts and noise persist on some surfaces, and flame effects disappoint with their lack of depth.

GTA 6 is shaping up to be a massive experience, but not without trade-offs. Following the gameplay leak revealed a few days ago, these new details confirm the game’s ambition — and its technical limits.
