A Xbox Elite Series 3 prototype was bought for $200 on an online marketplace. The now-deleted photos show a built-in screen, two scroll wheels, and a dedicated cloud gaming button. The non-functional controller confirms Microsoft’s ambitions for its high-end accessory.
A non-commercial prototype, but highly revealing
Purchased by a Reddit user on OfferUp, this model bears the "NOT FOR SALE" label and provisional regulatory IDs. Despite its $200 price, it doesn’t work wired or wirelessly on Xbox or PC: a blinking red light indicates a software lock reserved for Microsoft’s internal tools. The photos, shared by The Verge and Génération NT, circulated before being removed.
Screen, dials, and battery: confirmed new features
The most striking feature is a small LCD screen near the pairing button. It displays an Xbox Cloud Gaming icon, an Xbox Series X, or an inaccessible internal URL. According to sources, it could allow switching between local connection and cloud gaming via direct Wi-Fi, reducing latency. This feature was already mentioned in documents from Brazil’s regulator Anatel in May 2026.
Two scroll wheels, previously spotted in leaks, are positioned on the lower edge. Their purpose remains unclear: media control, command customization, or something else? The interchangeable rear paddles, adjustable trigger travel, and removable D-pad — classic Elite features — are retained.
The removable 1,528 mAh battery (5.8 Wh) replaces the built-in 2,050 mAh battery of the Elite Series 2. This modularity could allow the use of standard batteries, like on the standard Xbox controller. Repairability is also improved: accessible Torx screws and a QR code in the battery compartment suggest simplified maintenance, addressing criticism about the previous generation’s durability.
Official announcement expected at Gamescom?
Microsoft has yet to confirm the existence of the Elite Series 3, but sources from The Verge and Clubic indicate a release planned before the end of 2026. Gamescom, held from August 26 to 30 in Cologne, could be the occasion for an official reveal, especially since the controller has already leaked.
It remains to be seen which features will survive in the final version. The battery capacity, smaller than the Series 2’s, or the scroll wheel design could still change. One thing is certain: this prototype proves Microsoft is preparing a far more ambitious evolution than a simple aesthetic refresh.
If this prototype doesn’t necessarily reflect the final product, it offers a concrete preview of upcoming innovations. With a dedicated screen, mysterious dials, and improved repairability, the Elite Series 3 seems poised to establish itself as the premium controller of reference.
