Game Science surprises with 15 minutes of Black Myth Zhong Kui gameplay, its action-RPG in development. The title showcases a more dynamic combat system than Wukong, varied enemies, and an already impressive visual atmosphere, despite its pre-alpha status.
More accessible and choreographed combat
The video, released on August 20, 2026, reveals an agile protagonist capable of minimalist dodges and precise parries. Unlike Black Myth: Wukong, where movements were often spectacular, the actions here prioritize efficiency: a simple sidestep is sometimes enough to avoid an attack. Sword combos are fluid and technical, reminiscent of kung-fu movie duels, with detailed animations where blades clash at length.
The game also integrates magical mechanics. The hero can set the environment ablaze with an incendiary bomb, then channel those flames to imbue his weapon with elemental damage. Later, he summons a spiritual ally — a towering warrior — that he can briefly control to inflict massive damage. These elements, combined with battles against varied enemies (from swamp creatures to boss fights like a humanoid with mussel wings), suggest a less boss-centric approach than Wukong.
A world under construction, but already promising
The trailer alternates between combat sequences and exploration moments. It shows the hero interacting with an old sage, building a raft, or facing a giant wave before landing on a beach. The environments, inspired by Chinese folklore, are rich in detail: glowing mushrooms, hastily buried demons, or even a trio of skeleton musicians. The complete absence of dialogue in this demo raises questions about its final integration.
Game Science insists: the game is "still in early development." Some sequences may therefore evolve, including the interface or the aspect ratio (21:9 in the demo). The studio has not confirmed whether the protagonist shown is indeed Zhong Kui, the Taoist demon-hunting god, though he briefly appears at the end, riding his tiger.

Reactions and expectations
Players praise the visual quality and combat fluidity. Some already compare the title to references like Onimusha or Phantom Blade Zero, highlighting the precision of animations and enemy variety. Others are surprised by the project’s maturity despite its pre-alpha status. Game Science confirms the game will release on PC and "major consoles," with no date or specific platforms announced yet.

Black Myth Zhong Kui confirms that Game Science has no intention of resting on Wukong’s laurels. With more accessible combat, ambitious art direction, and innovative magical mechanics, the title already has plenty to intrigue. The question remains whether the studio can deliver on its promises by release, which still has no date.
