The Framework Laptop 12 now features Intel Core Series 3 processors and adds Thunderbolt 4 to two of its modular ports. The update also improves battery life, with up to 70% more video playback according to Framework.
More recent and power-efficient processors
Framework now offers its Laptop 12 with three Intel Core Series 3 processor options: Core 3 304, Core 5 320, and Core 7 350. These chips, built on 18A process, feature a hybrid architecture (2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores) and replace the Raptor Lake-U (13th gen) from the original model. Unlike the Laptop 13 Pro, which uses Core Ultra Series 3, the Laptop 12 is limited to these non-Ultra versions without the Intel Arc B390 iGPU.
Battery life is the main improvement in this update. Framework reports a 57% gain in web browsing and a 70% gain in Netflix playback on the Core 5 model compared to the old Core i5, despite an unchanged 50 Wh battery. These figures are based on the power efficiency gains of the new processors, already observed on the Laptop 13 Pro.
Thunderbolt 4 and modular options
Two of the four expansion card slots on the Laptop 12 now support Thunderbolt 4 via USB-C ports. This allows for the addition of an eGPU or compatible peripherals, a first for this compact model. The other ports remain customizable based on user needs.
The Laptop 12 retains its 12.2-inch touchscreen but offers an optional backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader. Both features are included by default on Linux pre-built versions (Core 5 and Core 7).
Pricing, configurations, and availability
Pre-built configurations start at $699 for a Linux (Fedora) model with Core 5, 16 GB DDR5 RAM, and 256 GB storage, available in green. The DIY version, without an operating system, is priced at $549 in black, gray, light purple, pink, or green. Framework notes that over 80% of first-gen Laptop 12 owners use Linux, which explains the default Fedora choice. Windows 11 is available as an option for an additional $100.
RAM ranges from 8 GB (Core 3) to 32 GB (Core 7) in pre-built models, with a 48 GB option for an additional $659. Pre-orders are open, with first shipments expected in October 2026.

A still versatile model
The Laptop 12 remains a 2-in-1 device (touchscreen and keyboard) designed for light mobile use: study, office work, or browsing. The new processors do not make it suitable for gaming or demanding tasks, as the Core 7 350 is limited to two Xe graphics cores. However, its extensive Linux compatibility (pre-installed Fedora, support prepared for other distributions) and port modularity make it a practical choice for developers or users who demand customization.
With this update, Framework bridges the technological gap of its Laptop 12 while retaining its DNA: modularity, durability, and software choice. The addition of Thunderbolt 4 and battery life improvements could win over those still hesitant to adopt this compact format.
